Peter King Says Buccaneers Among Five Teams As Favorite For Antonio Brown

Advertisements

Longtime Pittsburgh Steeler Antonio Brown has been frustrated with the team, and the two have agreed that it is time to part ways. Brown requested a trade and the organization obliged. Pittsburgh Steelers GM Kevin Colbert recently stated that three teams have contacted him about the veteran receiver. The teams were never mentioned by name, so we can only guess at this time as to who they were.

It would make sense that the Steelers would not want Brown to go anywhere near AFC and would likely prefer that he go to the NFC. Recently Peter King named five teams that he believes would be the most likely landing-place for Antonio Brown. King believes that the NFC South has two teams that would be ideal spots for Brown play.

First, he believes that the Carolina Panthers would be and ideal destination for Brown due to the organization’s dire need of a major turnaround.

He states:

“New owner David Tepper, a Pittsburgh guy, went to Pitt and then Carnegie Mellon, and donated $55 million to CMU, which now has a Tepper School of Business in his honor. He bought a 5 percent stake in the Steelers in 2009, preceding his purchase of the Panthers last year. So he’ll know the holes in Brown’s persona, but he’ll also know the difference Brown could make in a passing game that needs a downfield threat. Brown has averaged 114 catches and 1,524 yards a year for the past six years with the deep-armed Ben Roethlisberger, and he’ll be motivated to keep the distractions to a minimum so he can earn a new deal. Tepper is motivated to inject new life into a 24-25 team since Carolina’s Super Bowl appearance three years ago. Though GM Marty Hurney is a conservative type by nature, I think he could be convinced to take a shot on this get-rich-quick scheme. It’d thrill Cam Newton too.”

Second, on king’s list is the Washington Redskins. Although the Skins do not have a QB currently who can get the ball to Antonio Brown, King believes that the team is desperate and could take a shot at landing Brown.

“What team is more desperate than Washington, which is hemorrhaging fans, has no idea who the 2019 quarterback will be, has no idea who the 2020 coach will be, hasn’t won a playoff game in 14 years, and has an embattled owner searching for anything that will get his team out of the muck and mire of mediocrity? “

Then he moves on to Tampa Bay. King believes that Brown in Tampa makes sense. Avoiding Brown’s Tweets about Arians’ “diva remark,” King cites Arians’ connection to Pittsburgh and how DeSean Jackson had been wanting out of Tampa. Believing that Arians will want to throw the ball deep and more often than most it would make sense that the Bucs could seek a deep threat like Antonio Brown. I just do not think this is going to happen. We simply cannot afford to pay someone who will only work for guaranteed money.

“Dot-connecting. DeSean Jackson wants a new start out of Tampa. The new coach of the Bucs, Bruce Arians, was the Steelers’ play-caller in 2011 when Brown had his breakout NFL season. Arians wants to throw the ball deep more than any head coach in football. Makes sense to me.”

The other two teams that King states are the Jets and the Raiders. In my opinion with all of the draft picks Gruden has and how he oh so loves a veteran deep threat, the Raiders would be the team I believe Antonio Brown ended up playing for in 2019. I would not mind seeing Brown in Tampa, I just know that there is virtually no way it could happen, but could you imagine the deep threat of that kind of offense?

Tyrann Mathieu Hinting at Arians Reunion?

Advertisements

Recently news came out that McCoy is staying in Tampa and in an odd sort of twist free-agent safety Tyrann Mathieu retweeted a post from Profootballtalk about the McCoy situation calling it a win.

Now I may be reading a bit into this as I’ve done before and many others will likely do the same, but to me, it sounds like maybe he’s hinting at a reunion with his former head coach Bruce Arians. It would be a dream scenario for many Bucs fans if this happens to be the case. I would be on the fence.

Either way, I just saw this tweet and thought it was interesting. I do understand players love to see other players succeed, but saying this is a win will definitely have some hamsters turning wheels.

Antonio Brown is Not a Fit For Tampa

Advertisements

Opinion Editorial:

As much as I like the idea, there is no way on Earth that Antonio Brown to Tampa Bay would work.

Recently, a couple of sources have mentioned that on a SiriusXM Radio show, “Movin The Chains” that former NFL QB and now Radio host Jim Miller believes that Bruce Arians is capable of handling a player like Antonio Brown.

Of course, Arians wants DeSean Jackson to “come home brother” and if he doesn’t Brown could be a nice piece to add, although very expensive. Considering Jackson and Winston could not get on the same page and the fact that Mike Evans sees a majority of passes thrown his way, how could anyone think Brown would be happy in Tampa? I do understand that Arians, who recently called Brown a diva, which made Brown Twitter retaliate, is not your “run of the mill head coach” and our new offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich isn’t likely to “play the radio” with any antics from his players, but there is also the issue of Brown’s contract.

Brown is too expensive and with paying Mike Evans on his blockbuster $82.5 million contract, along with Jameis Winston coming up with a contract, along with… I’ll just stop there. Antonio Brown to Tampa Bay is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. No offense to anyone it’s just that we simply cannot afford him right now. Unless we make a ton of cuts.

Bob Costas Fired By NBC

Opinion Editorial:

When I heard that sports broadcasting legend Bob Costas had been fired, I could not believe it. Bob Costas worked for NBC for nearly forty years and in that time gave some the of most memorable broadcasts. Costas was one that always gave his personal opinion on things, and I respected him for that.

Last year he was taken off of the Super Bowl broadcast because NBC wanted him to tone it down. Costas refused and continued doing what he had always done. He went on national television saying that the sport[football] was brutal and it destroys players’ brains, and that did not go over well with NBC or the NFL. You know the old adage, “money talks and bullsh*t walks.” NBC has a $9 billion contract with the NFL, so speaking out will get you shown to the door.

Bob Costas is 66 years of age, meaning we may have likely seen the last of him on a major network. What a shame! He did a great job for so many years and considering that there are so many commentators that annoy me with Costas not being one, it is a terrible loss.

Cam Newton Underwent Surgery

Buccaneer rival Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton underwent surgery on his shoulder.

We reported not too long ago that the Carolina Panthers new owner acknowledged they might be without their star QB for the 2019 season.

Today Around The NFL reported Panthers organization stated that Newton had an “arthroscopic procedure” on his shoulder and would begin rehabilitation immediately.

Roger Goodell Can Overturn The Rams Win?

Advertisements

It seems that the controversial no call on the pass interference committed by Robey Coleman of the Rams on Saints WR Tommylee Lewis can still be argued over in the NFL. According to an article written by CBS Sports reads as:

“Lingering with that game and the outcome is the NFL’s lack of a statement about the lack of a penalty. And lingering over that is a pretty insane and broad rule in the NFL rulebook that would allow NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, should he so choose, to reverse or reschedule the outcome of the game between the Saints and Rams. “

Goodell is the NFL’s Lex Luther in a lot of ways, so his role as the villain on either side by leaving the outcome of the game alone is fitting. He could remain indifferent and be the villain of the Saints, or he could be the villain of LA and force the NFC Championship to be replayed. Doing that would be a scheduling nightmare, however, forcing teams, the stadium, TV networks, and food venues to squeeze in at the last minute. That’s just scratching the surface the issues it would cause for the Rams and Saints to replay the Championship. Undoubtedly, if it happened, it would have to happen next Sunday, which would cause preparation issues for the Super Bowl scheduled in two weeks. It seems unlikely that they’ll replay the NFC Championship, but it’s a possibility.

What We Can Expect From The Falcons Next Year

Advertisements

One of the worst-kept secrets this offseason was that our former Head Coach Dirk Koetter and the Falcons were interested in a reunion. So no one was surprised when he was hired by the Falcons to be their Offensive Coordinator.

So now what should we expect? That’s an easy question to answer. Koetter loves the pass and hates the run as we all know from experience.

During his time in Atlanta, the Falcons averaged less than 100 rushing yards per game, and we’re still one of the top offenses based on their pass numbers.

During Koetter’s first year in Tampa, the Bucs averaged 135 rushing yards a game. The next 3 years we averaged well under 100.

With Koetter in Atlanta, we should expect a pass-heavy offense that will abandon the run when they fall behind.

We can’t ignore the weapons that Atlanta has in the passing game, but we all know that one-dimensional teams do not work in this league.

It seems that Koetter going to Atlanta will work out in the Bucs favor after all.

Multiple Teams Are Interested in Kareem Hunt.

Advertisements

*Opinion Editorial*

Multiple teams interested in former Chiefs’ RB Kareem Hunt, who now is expected to have a job ‘sooner rather late’, per source,” is what Adam Schefter recently Tweeted. But who are the interested parties?

In Schefter’s latest article on ESPN.com, he pointed out the connection between Bears HC Matt Nagy and the running back due to their ties at Kansas City during Hunt’s rookie season.

As for who the other teams are, only one can speculate who they might be. However, considering that Hunt’s recent altercation in a Cleveland hotel which landed him the assault charges that made KC decide to release him, many may shy away from signing the running back.

The investigation into his assault charges is believed to be wrapped up by March, meaning that he will likely become a large target during this year’s free agency.

I would like to think that Tampa would be interested in snagging this talented running back, especially if the charges are eventually dropped.

Bruce Arians did say that Jameis Winston needs a running back that can tear up yards and help the quarterback out. Le’Veon Bell’s name was hinted at. But, all things considered, if the charges were to be dropped, not only would hunt make the most sense, he would be a favorite of a large section of the Buccaneers fan base. Next question will be, “If the charges are dropped, how long will the NFL suspend Kareem Hunt?”

Is The Rooney Rule Enough?

Advertisements

The National Football League is beginning to show their true colors when it comes to filling head coaching positions. The case for the minority coach is really no case at all. In 2018 there were only eight minority coaches employed across the NFL. Mike Tomlin and Marvin Lewis are the two longest-tenured head coaches with Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. This is something that needs to be addressed in the National Football League because there are several qualified coaches being overlooked. What can the league do to ensure the problem is fixed in the future?

Bill Walsh started the movement in 1987 when the NFL adopted the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship group. While in San Francisco, Walsh would hire and train minorities so that when a head coaching position would open up, they’d be ready for their interview. He would assist Dennis Green, Ray Rhoades, and Sherman Lewis in attaining head coaching positions. The Fellowship Group has assisted in 2,000+ minorities gain valuable coaching experience over the years. Was this enough to stop minorities from being overlooked? Unfortunately, it was not.

The Rooney Rule was adopted in 2003. The Rooney Rule is required by every team with a head coaching vacancy to interview at least one or more minority coaching candidates. In 2009, the rule was expanded to include general managers and front office positions. The Pittsburgh Steelers owner, Dan Rooney, was the lead man in this movement and coincidentally is one of the eight teams with a minority coach in Mike Tomlin. The Rooney Rule is often criticized because many teams still seem to overlook or not interview minority coaches at all. The Oakland Raiders hired Jon Gruden this year without interviewing anyone else. They also fired longtime General Manager Reggie McKenzie to hire Mike Mayock (no general manager experience).

In 2018 there were 8 of 32 minority coaches. This number will emphatically go down as there were numerous firings at the end of the 2018 season. Marvin Lewis (Cincinnati), Steve Wilkes (Arizona), Todd Bowles (New York Jets), Vance Joseph (Denver), and Hue Jackson (Cleveland) were all fired in 2018. This leaves the NFL with three minority head coaches. The top NFL candidate for this offseason was Chiefs Offensive Coordinator, Eric Bieniemy. He is the mastermind that is the Kansas Chiefs high powered offense. There were five NFL teams that asked him to interview. He was not hired by any of them. Can you tell me how one of the top offensive minds in the league doesn’t get a head coaching job? The NFL is all about scoring points, and Bieniemy doesn’t get hired. Other minority coaches that were on the head coaching hunt were Kris Richards (Cowboys DC), Jim Caldwell (Colts/Lions Former HC), and Brian Flores (Patriots DC). In 2019, the only one of these candidates that will be manning an NFL sideline as a head coach is Brian Flores. He was hired as the Miami Dolphins Head Coach.

The Fritz Pollard Alliance has been in discussions with the NFL to help erect this problem. The NFL is hoping to take the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship to another level that would not only start at the NFL combine but also last the entire regular season. The NFL is looking at each team hiring a minority coach for both the offense and defense. This would hopefully expose more coaches to other teams and allow them to be interviewed and hired as head coaches down the road. Becoming a head coach is a long and rough road to travel, but everyone deserves a chance to pursue their dreams. If these candidates get a fair shake, I think the NFL will find that more fans will be viewing because children need to see players, coaches, general managers, and owners that look like them. The NFL will have these same coordinators, former head coaches, and collegiate coaches looking to make their dreams come true. Let’s begin to make a change in the NFL in 2020.

Koetter Lands OC Job in Atlanta

Advertisements

Recently fired Buccaneers HC Dirk Koetter has landed the OC job in Atlanta, the post he previously held before becoming the Bucs HC. Koetter’s tenure in Tampa was rocky at best. Most fans are glad to see him out the door. His play calling was questionable, and he never did develop Jameis Winston into an elite QB, something fans are counting on new Bucs HC Bruce Arians accomplishing.

There are no hard feelings, of course, Koetter did the best he could with what he had, creating the most potent passing attack in the NFL. Yet the defense couldn’t stop a high school team from scoring.

Koetter is a better OC than he is a head coach and I’m sure we all wish him the best of luck. Except when he faces off against the Bucs of course.
