Fan Feature: 2020 Is The Year Of Chemistry?

Advertisements

The 2019 Tampa Bay Buccaneers ended the season with a losing record, and we all know that, but the one thing that no analyst or critics are talking about is the chemistry that the team ended the season with.

The Buccaneers defense was firing on all cylinders, which is something we haven’t seen for over a decade and the offense played the last three games of the season with the next man up mentality, due to a bunch of injuries to star players. Let’s also not forget to mention that we had a quarterback playing with a broken thumb and a meniscus tear, who only missed one series all season long. Yeah, we’ve all heard about the “Jaboo: 30 for 30 club”, but no one is talking about how much trust his teammates have for him or their willingness to go to war every week with him.

There was also a much-improved defense in 2019, that was virtually dead last in everything in 2018, one that couldn’t cover a bed if they were a blanket, but with a new attitude, a few tweaks and trimming of dead weight, the defense chemistry the team showed was something we all were hoping for when the Bucs hired Todd Bowles.

With the 2020 offseason up and swinging let’s try to keep the guys we have, instead of selling the chemistry the team is building let’s build on it with the foundation, we already have, and add the pieces we know we need and let’s get back to where we need to be: The postseason.

Jamel Dean: PFF’s Highest Graded Rookie CB For 2019

Advertisements

When the Buccaneers selected Jamel Dean with the 94th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft, not many knew what kind of player he would be; however, all Dean ended up doing was impress everyone. He began showing promise in camp and that continued to the preseason, and after a touchy first outing during the regular season, he began showing signs that he is going to be a nightmare in the secondary. Pro Football Focus has given Buccaneers’ third-round pick their highest rookie cornerback grade for the 2019 season. During the 2019 campaign, Dean tallied two interceptions (tied for 3rd out of all rookies) for 31-yards (7th in the league for rookies with Sean Murphy-Bunting’s 88 interception return yards, leading all rookies), 19 pass defends (ranked 7th in the league and lead all rookies), and 21 combined tackles. He did this in 5 starts and playing in 33% of the defensive snaps in 13 total games.

More Honors:  Week 10 * He is the first Buccaneers to record 4 pass defends in a single game since Brent Grimes achieved it in 2012.

Dean is one of the first Buccaneers defenders since recording PD statistics began in 1999 to record 4 passes defended in two consecutive games, and he is the first to achieve this since Brian Kelly graced a Buccaneers’ uniform(2002).

Dean was given the highest PFF rank of any defender for Week 10 at 95.5. The ranking was higher than that of CB Marcus Peters, who we all know how an outstanding game in week 10 with his 89-yard interception return shortly after being traded by the Rams, and that of Jets’ Safety Jamal Adams. Dean’s PFF ranking was quite impressive considering the company.

Buccaneers covering all the bases in Winston situation. (Opinion Editorial)

Hall Of Fame Choices

One thing is for sure, while almost nothing is, the Bucs won’t be caught with their pants down in the Contract Waltz with Jameis Winston. We don’t even know who is playing the lead in this dance. What we do know is that per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times is that Clyde Christensen has been saddled with working up scouting reports on the three Hall of Fame quarterbacks that enter free agency in 2020. I think we can probably cross Brady and Brees off the list right now. Brady will probably be retained by New England, because that’s where he has always been and where he was anointed G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All-Time) after being ringed on six of his ten digits. History won’t flow quite right if he ends up elsewhere. Add to that the fact that the Patriots couldn’t be in better hands in 2020 than Brady. Where would they find anyone clearly better? I would look for the Pats to sign Brady to a two-year deal, and draft a quarterback.

Two of the three will stay put?

The other quick scratch, Brees may or may not retire this season. Nothing is final until it’s announced, but it has been reported that Drew Brees is weighing options for broadcasting after he does retire. If he does come back for one more go at it, I don’t see it being with another team. Like Brady, he’s very much a part of his team’s home town. I’m only playing the odds, so I could be wrong, but I would be very surprised if either Brady or Brees left their current teams.

Rivers the best fit for Tampa

Then there is Rivers. His situation is crystal clear. The Chargers have said they are moving on from their Canton hopeful. In turn, Phillip Rivers has already left the state and moved his family to north Florida. Rivers to Tampa actually makes a lot of sense because of the other nugget that Rick Stroud dropped on his readers. According to Rick Stroud, the Buccaneers are believed to be looking to select a quarterback in the draft to be the backup and to learn under the starter for a year or two. Rivers gets behind center with the surrounding talent the Bucs have, and I could see him with some strong stats and being a winner here. We could find more success than what we have had in the last five years by signing Rivers to a two-year deal. He takes the rookie quarterback under his wing for two years, and then the young man would take over in year three. Don’t expect the quarterback selection in the draft to come in the first round, although it is a possibility. I’m thinking that somebody on their board will slip to the second round and possibly beyond. There will still be good players to choose from in rounds 2-3 at quarterback.

Winston probably stays one more year if not longer

After saying all of that, chances are, the Bucs future at quarterback this next season is going to be Jameis Winston. Much has been rumored. The strongest one being that Winston is being signed to a longer-term fat contract. I refuse to believe, even with the past decisions that have been made over at One Buc, that ownership would tie themselves to Winston for any long term money commit. I would expect sound ownership to tag Jameis Winston for 2020, then Draft a quarterback, and let the chips fall where they may after next season.

Former NFL players urge Bucs to wrap Winston up long term

Because truly it doesn’t matter how many former QB’s, booth announcers, NFL stars of yore say that Tampa should lock Winston up for the long term, all that goes to show is that their opinions are less sound than my own, being spoken without an inside weekly view of the spectacle that is Jameis Winston. What else could explain such terribly unsound football advice? I truly have no doubt that history will bare my judgment to be wise and solid. Full of myself? Not at all, but I long ago learned to trust my football judgment, and it’s based in common football sense, a very strong knowledge of the game, and talent evaluation, with a nose for the unseen. I’m not swayed by Winston’s big numbers or moments of greatness. His five thousand yards don’t impress me in the least. Not when his biggest flaw makes him one of the worst quarterbacks in the league. When you have a player that is very good and also very bad, the bad should always take precedence over the very good no matter what; especially when the bad has only gotten worse in the five seasons he has been here.

Wrapping up

While I do not buy what Winston is selling, nothing would make me happier than for him to finally repay the Bucs for their almost blind faith in him. I don’t care who the quarterback is for this team as long as they are a winner and can be trusted and counted on in tough times. Nobody is perfect, but you have to be able to have faith in the most important position on the team. When you don’t know what you are going to get from moment to moment, that is unacceptable and impossible. It is also a serious impediment to this team, realizing it’s potential. I’d love to be proven wrong about Winston. Hear that Jameis? Make me look the fool. Nothing would make me happier, I swear! Go Bucs!!

Bashaud Breeland an option for Tampa?

Advertisements

The 5th year corner from Clemson is a Super Bowl Champion after betting on himself last off-season and signing a one-year contract with the Chiefs.

Now, he is set to hit the open market if a deal doesn’t happen. Could he bet on himself again? He would fit in Todd Bowles’ system like Tetris. He’s definitely a plug and play.

In 5 years, Breeland has 268 tackles, 72 passes deflected, 12 picks, 2 TDs along with 7 forced fumbles, and 5 fumbles recovered. We could get him on possibly a two-year team-friendly deal costing no more than $3-4 million a year. Last season he played in al 16 regular-season games, starting in 15 and played in 82% of the Chief’s defensive snaps. He recorded 2 fumble recoveries 1 of which was a 100-yard score against the Detroit Lions, 8 pass defends, 2 interceptions and 48 combined tackles. During the postseason, he recorded 18 combined tackles, 3 pass defends, and an ** interception in the Super Bowl.

*If I were Jason Licht and Bruce Arians, I’d be calling his agent if he makes it to free-agency.*

Riddle’s Rundown: Bucs should target Cam Akers on day 2

Advertisements

Fans have been arguing back and forth on whether or not the Bucs should target a RB in the upcoming 2020 draft. The season just ended, and already there’s a huge debate between fans. Some say grab a RB in the first such as Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor others say go after a veteran free agent. I, on the other hand, believe there is a perfect RB that the Bucs can grab that would make a perfect duo with Ronald Jones.

Florida State’s Cam Akers has tremendous talent and could be on the board as late as the 3rd round. As a junior last season, he ran for 1,144 YARDs with a 5.0 YPC to go with 14 TDs on the ground, 30 receptions for 225 YDS, and 4 TDs. That adds up to a grand total of 1,369 yards from scrimmage and 18 total TDs.

Now Akers does have his critics and people who question his football ball IQ, and at times he can get anxious around the line of scrimmage, but both of these problems can be fixed with the right coaching. On the other hand, Akers has a deadly combination of size and speed.

At 5’11” 212lbs, he hits the hole with authority and will rarely go down after the first contact, always keeps his legs moving, and has the speed to take it to the house either on the ground or through the air whenever given the ball.

If Akers is still on the board in the third, that would be hard to pass on. Akers has the ability to be the total package at RB, and if paired with Ronald Jones, they definitely have the talent to wreak havoc against opposing defenses.

Super Bowl 55: Bucs could make history?

Advertisements

February 7th, 2021 – Mark it on your calendar Bucs Life, the Super Bowl is coming back to Tampa.

This isn’t just any Super Bowl being played in Raymond James Stadium. 2020 has already brought Monster Jam and another happening in a few weeks, the XFL debuts for the first time on February 22 against the Houston Roughnecks, Wrestlemania 36 on April 5th, Kenny Chesney and friends May 9th, Guns and Roses August 15th, and possibly a Rolling Stones concert. TAMPA BAY IS THE PLACE TO BE FOR 2020-2021!

The Bucs could make history by being the first home team to capture a Super Bowl at home, as the NFC will be the home team for Super Bowl 55.

(Note: The Bucs were the home team in Super Bowl 37, which took place in San Diego.)

The team finished 7-9 last season. With the new league year coming in March and draft in April (Las Vegas), and still needing to re-sign key players such as JPP, Shaq Barrett, and their QB Jameis Winston, it could do something no other team has ever done before, and win a Super Bowl in their own stadium.

Forty Niners Success: Can it happen here?

Advertisements

Forty-Niners go from only 4 wins to 13 in one year

I don’t know about you, but that earns them an ‘Attaboy’ in my book. You have teams in this league that have been trying to turn it around for ten, fifteen, twenty, or more years. The Chiefs just got to and won their first in 50 years, and these guys got to a Super Bowl in just three seasons, basically from scratch? It’s insane. The Bucs, the Bills, the Bears, the Browns, the Bengals, all desperately trying to get back to a Super Bowl, and these guys just Waltz in and make it look like child’s play.

Shouldn’t the Bucs be expected to do as well?

My question is this: Could the Bucs be the first home team in Super Bowl History in Arians’ third season? After all, the roster Arians had to work with, when he got here, was loaded with talent. His first draft for the Bucs will probably go down as a top 2 in Bucs history. That would certainly lend itself to saying that as for Arians’ three-year plan, “he’s looking extremely solid.” He still has two more drafts, and free-agent periods to add talent to a team that doesn’t lack much as it stands; the offensive line is a need, and quarterback to some degree notwithstanding.

Ground game improvement (offensive line) is a must

I really don’t feel like I’m going out on a limb here when I say, “that if the Bucs don’t go deep in the playoffs, and at least make it to the Conference Finals by 2021, that this team would be underperforming in a big way.” So to answer my own question, Yes, it can happen here, and considering the same parameters, it should even more so happen here. I think that a big chunk of this team’s chances of winning another Super Bowl lies squarely on Arians/Leftwich and their ability to make Ronald Jones and the running game more of a priority. They don’t have to run more than throw, they can remain a passing team. There are enough plays in a game to deliver 30-35 touches weekly and still throw the ball a good bit more than that. The Forty-Niners mostly did what they did on the ground. Our strength lies in our receivers for the most part, so passing can bring success here. Make no mistake about it, the Bucs must fix the offensive line and use Jones more. He can be a franchise back like one we haven’t had since Warrick Dunn. I do not doubt that he can be every bit as good as Dunn was. At this point, the Bucs are wasting the huge upside of Ronald Jones.

It’s time to expect more from our Coaches and front office

Jones could take over games as he did in the second half of the Falcons’ game in week 17. Most of the 106 yards that game, he got in the second half. Eleven carries at almost ten yards per carry. He’s the kind of back that gets stronger and makes the defense look silly with the more carries he gets. It’s time to expect more from our coaches and front office. They are, without a doubt, on the right path to making this team great again. They should be expected to be able to finish filling out this team and make it a force in today’s NFL. After all, Lynch and Shanahan did it with less. Go Bucs!!

My Thoughts on Super Bowl 54

Advertisements

Last night, America witnessed some great things during the Super Bowl. Yes, we all witnessed Andy Reid lifting the Lombardi Trophy, finally punching his ticket to the fast-food buffet at the White House.

Congratulations, Coach, on finally winning it all after the Bucs beat your Eagles during our run, and then being let down by Donovan & T.O a few years later. I wanted to see John Lynch raise it, but you’re the best coach behind B.A. that deserves to raise the Lombardi as a Head Coach.

Congratulations to the entire Kansas City Chiefs organization and fan base. You guys earned this. As a fan, I’ve been waiting for my team to get back there after 17 years. One day, Tampa will have their second NFL World Championship. Being a previous Kansas resident, I know how much this championship means to the fan base. Congratulations, Chiefs Nation!!!

Next, Congratulations to our very own, Keith “Big Nasty” Kunzig on his induction to the Ford Hall of Fans. I have read so many articles about your moment. As a father who grew up with you, coming to my school as a kid, and a fan of this wonderful team. Thank you for everything you do within the fanbase, but also what you do within the community.

Now, with the Super Bowl being in Tampa next February, can we get more Shakira? Someone tell Jay-Z to make it happen, and it doesn’t even have to be halftime. Tampa’s going to need an after-party after the Bucs win the Lombardi at home as the home team since NFC gets to be the home team for #SB55

Shaq Barrett snubbed for DPOY as Patriots’ Gilmore wins

Advertisements

This season has definitely been something special for Tampa Bay’s new Sack Master. 58 tackles, 19.5 sacks, 1 INT, and 6 forced fumbles later, Barrett definitely set the bar high for himself.

Fast forward to the present, and Barrett was 4th in the DPOY honors won by Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore. TJ Watt was also in the mix to be named the winner of the award. Without taking anything away from the play of Gilmore, but in my opinion, he isn’t the type of corner that you would call a “shutdown” or “premier” corner. Don’t get me wrong, he’s good, but he’s not Charles Woodson or Deion Sanders great, he’s just a good corner that had an extraordinary year.

As for T.J. Watt, I can’t really act surprised that a Watt is in the talks for the top defensive player of the year award. It is shocking, though, that there’s no mention of J.J. Watt, but injuries have dampened his season, so his brother just carried the Watt name this season. He has definitely come into his own with Pittsburgh and will be a force to be reckoned with just as James Harrison was for the black-and-yellow for years.

Barrett has definitely set the NFL on fire this season with his play and went what seemed like sack for sack with Arizona Cardinals OLB Chandler Jones for a good chunk of the season. Barrett, who signed a one-year deal, did more than just show up and show out. When he spoke with Salty Dogs Podcast during camp back in July, Barrett spoke of signing due to the opportunity to start and make plays, and well, he bet big and won big, in my opinion. Not many players can come into a franchise, with a new defensive scheme for all 11 players, and end the season setting a new sack record after 20 years. Barrett (again, my opinion), has been snubbed for the Defensive Player of the Year for the fact that he signed to a smaller marketed team. Had he stayed in Denver and compiled these types of stats, he would’ve easily been atop of the rankings, and we wouldn’t be having this type of argument.

Shaq Barrett wins Deacon Jones award!

The 2019 season had a lot of ups and downs for the Buccaneers. The center focus of a lot of those ups was former Bronco turned Buccaneer Outside Linebacker Shaquil Barrett. Barrett spent the better part of the season wreaking havoc on prominent offensive linemen and making offensive coordinators sweat.

The fruit of his labor was 19.5 sacks and an interception, because of this, he was given the Deacon Jones award. Congratulations Shaquil! We hope to see you in a Bucs uniform next season!
