Why Tampa Not Re-signing Alexander Was a Good Move.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers let Kwon Alexander test free agency, and he chose to sign a four-year $54 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers. The fan disappointment was huge, but many fans forget Alexander is coming off a major injury. Tampa has the 5th overall pick, and there is team changing defensive talent in this year’s draft and the Buccaneers has a proven defensive coordinator in Todd Bowles.

The following players could be available: Nick Bosa, Devin White, Rashan Gary, Montez Sweat, and Devin Bush. Bucs Defensive coordinator Todd Bowles could turn any one of these guys into the key piece that Tampa Bay needs to immediately improve on the defense.

The move made by the Buccaneers in not signing Alexander may seem like a cap issue, but was also a calculated risk that based on the deal the 49ers gave Alexander looks like a great move by Tampa. The 49ers understood the risk and gave him a deal that is highly based on him being healthy and productive.

Bowles will take whoever the Buccaneers draft and put him into a position so the defense can win games. If you’re not excited about the Tampa D possibly making a return to their old school form, you should be. Bowles has greatly improved every defense he’s coached, and with the talent in Tampa, I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
