Bucs Await Decision on Godwin Extension Amid New Offensive Scheme
2 min read
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are taking a cautious approach regarding a potential contract extension for veteran wide receiver Chris Godwin. This decision hinges on how well Godwin fits into the new offensive scheme under recently hired offensive coordinator Liam Coen.
What Do We Know So Far?
In his seven seasons with the Buccaneers, Chris Godwin has amassed impressive statistics:
• Receptions: 529
• Yards: 6,690
• Touchdowns: 34
Godwin has been a model of consistency and professionalism both on and off the field. His adaptability in various game situations has made him a key player for the Buccaneers. However, frustrations have arisen within Godwin’s camp, particularly from his wife, who took to social media to express concerns about the lack of production in 2023 under then-offensive coordinator Dave Canales. Despite these frustrations, Godwin has remained positive and loyal to his teammates and fans.
New Offensive Leadership
The Buccaneers’ offense will see a shift with the arrival of Liam Coen as the new offensive coordinator. Coen brings a mix of NFL and college experience to the table. Notably, he had a stint with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022, where he had the chance to work with current Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield. Although the Rams finished with a disappointing 5-12 record and ranked 27th in offensive production, Coen’s return to college football proved successful. As the offensive coordinator for the University of Kentucky, he oversaw an offense that recorded 11 plays of 50+ yards—the most in the SEC—and significantly improved their offensive line’s performance, allowing only 22 sacks compared to leading the power five in sacks allowed the previous season.
My bet on Coen’s offensive scheme in Tampa includes plenty of jet motions and tight end/H-back motions coming back across the formation to either pass block or release. I predict that rookies running back Bucky Irving and Washington tight end Devin Culp will play significant roles in the offense as well. Coen’s strategy will likely involve movement on almost every snap to disorient the defense and force them into mistakes. Additionally, wide receiver Palmer should have ample opportunities as a deep threat, taking advantage of the confusion and mismatches created by the constant motion.
Looking Ahead
As the Buccaneers gear up for the 2024 season, competition will be fierce in training camp. Tampa Bay has a wealth of talent on the roster, and the key question is whether the team can effectively harness this potential under Coen’s new offensive scheme.
