Todd Bowles just received a new three-year deal, which according to Adam Schefter, will replace his old contract, but that doesn’t mean he can’t field offers for a head coaching position. However, he has assured everyone that he is not currently worrying about a Job elsewhere.
“I love it here. We’ve got a great group of coaches that Bruce Arians has put together,” Bowles said Thursday via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Times. “We have good players. They’re great to work with. Love the area and the camaraderie. It’s not about being a head coach, it’s about being the best coach with a chance to succeed and be happy, and I’m happy here.”
He came to Tampa two seasons ago and inherited a bottom-ranked defense.
Within two seasons, he has turned the defense completely around and is now being considered a top 5 by just about anyone with eyes.
Although the Buccaneers defensive guru, earlier this year, had drawn interests from other teams for a head coaching position, that is the furthest thing from his mind. He is more focused on the task at hand.
“I have a desire to get my team ready,” Bowles said. “I don’t look for the next job. You look for the next job; you don’t do the job you have. If something comes up at the end of the year, that’s a discussion. Right now, it’s the furthest thing from my mind.”
The players he coaches certainly respect their defensive coordinator and have no problem giving him their all.
“He’s the type of defensive coordinator I would run through a brick wall for,” defensive lineman Will Gholston said via Jenna Laine. “If he said, ‘Hey, if you hit it at this angle, it’s going to fall down,’ I wouldn’t second-guess it. He’s always right
Bruce Arians is under contract, and he will be the head coach this season, but there is one glaring question, who will take the reigns when Arians retires?
Locking Todd Bowles in for three years does not disclude him from fielding offers from other teams, but it certainly helps the Buccaneers hold on to him a bit longer and allow them to counter any offer made to him.
