Bucs To Make Todd Bowles The Highest Paid Defensive Coordinator

Adam Schefter reports that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Todd Bowles agree to a three-year contract extension which also precludes him from taking another head coaching job.

Bowles currently has one year remaining on his current contract, as this new deal would replace it.

The former New York Jets head coach has made the world of difference since joining the Bucs three years ago when head coach Bruce Arians was named to replace Dirk Koetter and then defensive coordinator Mike Smith. Since then, the Bucs have added veterans Ndamukong Suh, Kevin Minter, and Shaquil Barrett. The team has also drafted numerous stars on the defense, including Vita Vea, Devin White, Sean Murphy-Bunting, Antoine Winfield Jr, Carlton Davis III.

Since 2019, Bowles’ defense led the NFL in sacks, mainly due to Barrett’s franchise record 19.5 sacks. In 2020, the Bucs defense won the franchise’s second Super Bowl while holding Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to only nine points and creating nightmares for the 2019 NFL MVP for years to come.
