Positions of Need: Backup QB

3 min read

Heading into the 2019 NFL Draft everyone from fans to experts has their own opinion of what the Bucs need to address. One of the positions that barely gets talked about is the quarterback position. Whether or not you think Jameis Winston is the next Tom Brady the fact remains that the Bucs need a backup.

Both of the Ryans, Fitzpatrick, and Griffin, are unrestricted free agents and are not likely to be back next season. Now the Bucs could go the free agency route, but when you look at the list and see names like Tyrod Taylor, Josh McCown, Trevor Siemian, and Teddy Bridgewater, you realize that the draft might be the best way to go. Who do we draft and why? Well, that is why I am here. Let us take a look at some realistic QB prospects that could fall to the Bucs.

Clayton Thorson, Northwestern.
Now I know what you are thinking; Who? Just hear me out. If there ever was a case for a good player being held back by everything around him, this is your guy. Thorson’s stats are not pretty, but this kid shows a lot of promise. The main issue with him is he tries to do too much because of the terrible supporting cast he had. He is accurate, has a solid arm, and has gotten better every year. Scouts say his throwing motion is mechanical and he does not go deep a lot. He has a second to third round grade and could be an attractive option for Tampa.

Will Grier, West Virginia.
I am not going to lie this is my favorite QB prospect. I have watched Grier very closely. I started watching him when he played for UF, and then when he transferred to West Virginia. There is a lot to love from the accuracy of his deep throws, decision-making, and his poise in the pocket. His most unfavorable trait is his lack of arm, even though when you look at his games, he has plenty of NFL caliber type throws. He is one of the most intriguing prospects because some have him as a first-round future starter and others have him as a 3rd round or later or even as a career backup. He is another intriguing option for the Bucs as he could be picked up in later rounds.

Now for my dark horse pick: Jacob Dolegala, Central Connecticut.
Dolegala is a guy that is beginning to pick up some serious steam. He has barely received any media attention, but lately, he has been generating buzz due to his size 6’6 and his skill set. He could be a late option for Tampa due to the belief that he will receive a 5th or 6th round projection.

Plenty of talented QBs will be available after the draft via the undrafted free agent ranks, and a lot of familiar names like Gardner Minshew, Brett Rypien, Trace McSorley, and Nick Fitzgerald is projected to go undrafted. The Bucs certainly have a big decision to make when it comes to the QB position behind Jameis Winston. Keep it locked to ATB and Bucs Life News for the latest on the Tampa Bay Bucs!!!
