The Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicked off their season with a dominant 37-20 victory over the Washington Commanders, holding control of the game from the start. Baker Mayfield led the Bucs with an impressive performance, completing 24-of-30 passes for 289 yards and 4 touchdowns. The Bucs offense fired on all cylinders, while the defense contained the Commanders for much of the game, holding them to just 14 points until the final minutes.
Jayden Daniels, the rookie quarterback for the Commanders, made a strong debut. While trying to spark a comeback, Daniels showed off his dual-threat ability, rushing for 88 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns and adding 184 passing yards. Despite his efforts, Washington struggled to keep up with Tampa Bay’s balanced attack.
The Bucs’ “Pewter Power Trio” of running backs—Rachaad White, Bucky Irving, and Sean Tucker—stood out, combining for a solid ground game that allowed Tampa Bay to control the tempo and grind out the clock when needed. Mike Evans also contributed with 5 receptions for 61 yards and 2 touchdowns, further showcasing the offense’s firepower.
The downside for Tampa Bay came in the form of injuries to key defenders Bryce Hall and Antoine Winfield Jr., who both left the game and are expected to miss extended time. Coach Todd Bowles will need to make adjustments in the secondary as the team prepares to face the Detroit Lions in Week 2.
