On Monday, March 15th, the NFL’s legal tampering window begins for free agency. Nothing official can happen until free agency begins on Wednesday the 17th, but teams can reach out to players and agents, and principle agreements can be had this Monday. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers used the franchise tag on wide receiver Chris Godwin but were not afraid to use it on the cornerback Carlton Davis if Godwin and the team could come to an agreement. Davis will now receive suitors from across the NFL, and in a recent report from 93.7 the Fan’s Andrew Filliponi, the Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly ready to make a move on, not just Carlton Davis but Jordan Whitehead as well.
We all knew that this could be the case with players like CD3, Whitehead, and Big Red (Ryan Jensen) hitting the open market. The Ravens are rumored to want their former LG/ Center back. When it comes to those guys, yes, they love it in Tampa, and they love the fans, but money is money, so do not expect to give the hometown discount with so much playing time left in their careers.
Filipponi pointed out that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are making Davis and priority, and we know that they are looking at Whitehead as a high-priority guy as well. But the Buccaneers currently have a little over $2 million in cap compared to the Steelers, close to $30 million. The Steelers are also another name thrown into the list of suitors for center Ryan Jensen. I have a pretty good connection to both Jensen and Davis, but as of right now, all options are on the table, and despite indications that Davis may not be going anywhere and it’s known the love Jensen has for the state, the team, and the fans, but a lot of things will factor into the decision making.
