Bucs vs. Eagles - Rick Schutlz

It seems like a bit of deja vu for Bucs fans as they prepare to face the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Wildcard Round.

The rubber match between the two franchise’s date back 45 years

The Bucs and Eagles have met 20 times, including the Playoffs — with the Bucs winning the past three. The last time both teams met was during Week Six, with the Bucs traveling to Philly and beating the Eagles 28-22. Brady passed for 297 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in a winning effort. Leonard Fournette also had a huge day on the ground rushing for 81 yards and two touchdowns on 22 attempts. The Bucs offense also held Philly’s defense to zero sacks, helping Brady navigate the Bucs to victory. But it was the Bucs defense who could’ve easily lost the game allowing second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts to find the endzone 3 times, once in the air with two on the ground.

Things get more intense in the playoffs, as we all know. The last three times both teams met in the post-season, the Eagles walked away with a win. The last victory the Bucs hold in the playoffs against the Eagles came in the 2002 NFC Championship when the Bucs defeated the Eagles 27-10; to shut down the Vet on the cold January night. The Bucs would go on to capture their first Super Bowl against the Oakland Raiders two weeks later.

Could the Bucs win their first Wildcard home game since 2007?

Interestingly enough, this will be the first playoff game since 2007, when they lost to the New York Giants, 24-14 in the Wildcard Round. The Giants would eventually go on to spoil Tom Brady and the New England Patriots’ undefeated season by beating them in Super Bowl XLII, 17-14.

Last season, Brady and the Bucs began their Super Bowl run by defeating the Washington Football Team, 31-21, in FedEx Field. These playoffs will indeed be different as the Bucs will not have to solely be on the road and have the chance to do what hasn’t been done since 2003-2004 when Tom Brady and the Patriots won back-to-back Super Bowls.
