In the offseason leading up to the 2019 season, the Buccaneers signed WR Breshad Perriman to a one-year, $4M deal. Perriman was coming in to play alongside Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. The signing was not a disappointment.
With Evans and Godwin going down late in the 2019 season due to injuries, Perriman stepped up in the biggest way. Perriman had three straight games with 100+ receiving yards, including a three-touchdown performance against the Detroit Lions on December 15th. The 2019 season was the best of his career, finishing with 645 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
After the season, the Buccaneers let Perriman cash in on those performances elsewhere as he signed a one-year, $8M deal ($6M guaranteed) with the New York Jets. Breshad Perriman would battle injuries throughout the year and still accumulated 505 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Fast forward to 2021, and the Buccaneers brought Perriman back to be a member of the practice squad on November 9th. With Antonio Brown serving a three-game suspension, Perriman was officially promoted to the active roster after being elevated from the practice squad twice.
During Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills, the Buccaneers came out flat in the second half allowing a 24-3 lead to be erased. The game ultimately ended up going to overtime tied at 27. The Bills received the kickoff and punted to the Buccaneers after a three-and-out.
Insert Breshad Perriman. Third and three from the Buccaneers own 42-yard line. Perriman runs a crossing route that was originally supposed to free up Mike Evans. Instead, the play freed up Perriman across the middle and down the sideline he went. Perriman scored the game-winning 58-yard touchdown, which also ended up being Tom Brady’s 700th career touchdown pass.
The Buccaneers truly needed that play. The team is now sitting at 10-3, which is good for third in the NFC. A win on Sunday against the Saints will clinch the NFC South for the Buccaneers for the first time since 2007. So ultimately, at that moment and when he has been needed as a Buccaneer, one word can describe Breshad Perriman, and that is clutch.
