Congrats to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2020 second-round draft pick for winning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month! For the first time in Buccaneers’ franchise history, a defensive back has won this honor and is the first to ever win it in an opening month.
Winfield Jr. has played outstanding football in the month of September, putting together 2 sacks, 23 tackles, 3 QB hits, 1 pass defended, and 1 forced fumble!
The rookie out of Minnesota is already drawing fan comparison to the Legendary Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive back Ronde Barber, and as big as those shoes are to fill, it is an honor for any Rookie DB to draw such a comparison. Other comparisons, per Scott Smith, senior writer for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, include; Tyrann Mathieu and Budda Baker.
Also, according to Scott Smith, this is the 3rd straight month a Buccaneers’ player has won this award spanning back to last season in November and December when Devin White claimed this award. Additionally, Winfield Jr. is just the fourth Tampa Bay Buccaneers player to win this award in franchise history. Lavonte David November 2012, Noah Spence November of 2016, and of course, Devin white in the final two months of 2019. A remarkable feat.
