Reasons Why Gronk Came Out of Retirement

Gronk has been great the entire time he played in the NFL but he had also received his fair share of injuries, so when he retired a couple of seasons ago, it seemed unlikely that a comeback would be anytime soon, if ever.

Shortly after Tom Brady left the New England Patriots and later signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Gronk saw an opportunity that he could not pass up. He recently spoke to CBS Sports’ Tiki and Tierney about some of the reason why he came out of retirement.

“I don’t like to spill all the beans, but when Tom went down to Tampa, it just looked like a great situation, a great opportunity,” Gronk told the hosts. “I wasn’t just going to come back out of retirement just to come out of retirement … definitely one of [the factors] was Tom going down to Tampa. That was a big connection. To gain chemistry with a quarterback is not an easy task … that’s time you got to put in. That’s a lot of work you got to put it. And we put in work for the last –- before this year –- nine years. We built up major chemistry. I just kind of felt like it was a great situation to continue with Tom if I could.” – Per Larry Brown

“I was feeling healthy,” Gronkowski said. “I had that juice going again. When Tom and I talked a little bit and just thought about the situation and how we can pull it off and everything — everything went well. Everything went down as planned and the situations all lined up. I thought it was a great opportunity that I couldn’t pass on. It’s just going to be fun. It’s going to be cool.” – Per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

He loves the weather in Tampa, however, the main reason Gronk decided to come to Tampa was because of his mother “The main reason why I came down to Tampa to play is because my mother lives two hours away.” – Thanks Mom!

The former WWE Champ certainly had no other reason to return to playing football. He could have sat in the booth some where as a commentator, or worked as a coach. Gronk could have easily stayed with the WWE  and continued to make big money in that industry, but he chose to return to the NFL to play with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With the Buccaneers in all or nothing mode, the belief that the Buccaneers has what it takes to take real shot at a championship, especially with Tom Brady under the helm, must have been tantalizing. There are definitely a lot of players licking their chops right now and would waste no time to jump at the chance to play with the GOATS in Tampa Bay.
