When the Bucs signed Shaquil Barrett in the off-season and Bucs fans (including myself) dubbed him “Shaq Attack” and/or “Sack Barrett”, not one of us expected this type of production.
The man who spent his first 5 seasons learning from DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller (and was replaced by Bradley Chubb), has tied Warren Sapp’s franchise season sack record with 16.5. He has been the “Von Miller” in Tampa Bay.
When will Shaq own the franchise record?
All Shaq has to do is sneeze and he will own the franchise record.
My prediction is “Sack Master” Shaq will break the record on the second defensive series on Saturday against the Texans. I see it being on a 3rd down on our side of the 50. Call it crazy, but I’m attempting to predict when a new franchise record is set on defense (and it’s positive).
It also helps when you have the co-record holder cheering this young man on.
“Congratulations, but your Job ain’t done!! Take it DOWN!!!”
Is the NFL sack record in jeopardy?
Barrett only needs 6.5 more sacks to break Michael Strahan’s 2002 record of 22.5 sacks. Barrett at this moment is in 45th in the books, but can easily jump within the Top-10 or better. Barrett has 3 multi-sack games this season (2 games with 3+ sacks).
With teams like Houston and Atlanta coming to Ray Jay to finish out their season, it’s not hard to imagine 40 and 43 sack teams stopping Barrett from getting those 6.5 sacks. Either way he will be here next year to pick right up where left off. Bruce Arians has already said that “He [Shaq Barret] ain’t going anywhere.”
