When the Bucs signed Shaq Barrett back in March, no one expected him to set the world on fire. But, that’s exactly what he did since then season began.
9 sacks in 4 games
Yes, you’ve read that correctly. Shaq Barrett has accomplished what 3 other players in NFL history have accomplished. Only Mark Gastineau (1984, Jets), Kevin Greene (1998, Panthers), and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (2001, Packers) have recorded 9 sacks within the first 4 games.
But, what’s even better is he has more sacks than 10 NFL teams (Ravens, Bills, Broncos, Jets, Falcons, Bengals, Redskins, Raiders, Dolphins, and Eagles). That’s a major accomplishment on its own. Barrett has 9 out of the team’s 11 sacks, which is very impressive.
On pace for 36
Many experts have crunched the numbers together in regards to Barrett’s sack total. If he keeps his current pace, he is projected to shatter the NFL single-season mark with 36 sacks (the record is 22.5 held by Michael Strahan set in 2001).
Barrett could easily break the franchise record for sacks in a season which is held by Hall of Fame and Ring of Honor member Warren Sapp which was set in 2000 with 16.5 sacks. Will he get those 36? I wouldn’t think so, but the way this man has played, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if it happened.
Shaquil Barrett stats for 2019:
20 tackles
9 sacks
3 FF
1 INT
