Cairo Santos loses kicking job to Matt Gay

1 min read

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers waived veteran kicker Cairo Santos, yesterday, but is likely to land a job somewhere. Matt Gay was utilized more than Santos throughout the preseason, but Santos did well with limited playing time. However, Gay has a better leg.

Gay knocked down a couple of field goals from over 50 yards, and it was easy to see that they could have been made from 60. He went 5 for 6 in the preseason sealing the roster spot.

Arians mentioned that phone calls were already coming in about the kickers, giving way to the belief that a possible trade was looming, but Santos being waived shot down that theory.

Arians also stated that there had been a plan in place since the drafting of Matt Gay in the 5th round of the 2019 NFL draft, and things are going according to plan. Thankfully, Gay is looking like he will be a very consistent kicker. By the way some of our offensive line players performed during the preseason, Gay should be in a prime position to receive plenty of scoring opportunity.
