There’s a Battle for WR1?

2 min read

When assessing the depth of wide receivers for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, everyone starts with Mike Evans.

It’s the logical thing to do really! Start with the number 1 guy and go down the list. After Evans, people have all sorts of ideas. Is Godwin, Perriman, or Miller the number 2 guy? Where do the new guys fit in? Talking heads fill much of their time on this subject, moving around the pieces behind Mike.

Since being drafted 7th overall in 2014, Evans has numbers most players can only dream of, and these numbers alone show why he is considered the WR1 in Tampa. But what does Evans himself think?

Speaking with Kurt Warner, Evans discussed how the new offense is going to be more explosive and explained how his role within the offense isn’t changing despite the loss of DeSean Jackson and Adam Humphries. The most intriguing comment came when Warner asked about the number 2 wideout when Evans said, “Godwin obviously, we’re actually competing for number 1. That’s just how highly I think of him.” Also going on to confirm that he believes Jameis Winston is the Franchise QB.

For those that follow the Bucs, it is no surprise that Chris Godwin is so highly regarded. It was a surprise that Godwin was still on the board in the 3rd round in 2017, making him one of the steals of the draft that year. Outside of the Bay Area, it won’t take long for people to notice Godwin and this reporter is quite happy to see the Bucs carry two WR1 on the roster.

This is by far the most dynamic depth the Buccaneers have seen at this position since the days of Joe Jurevicius, Keenan McCardell, and Keyshawn Johnson. Hopefully, this talented group is rewarded with the game’s ultimate title. Until then, let the WR1 fight continue.
