It’s Bucs Life News’ writer Kyle Riddle here, and this is going to be my new weekly column on the state of the Buccaneers. This week we’re going to discuss if the Bucs have the chance to have a winning season and possibly make the playoffs.
On offense, QB Jameis Winston has many weapons at his disposal. Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are going to tear the League up. No Doubt. You can also expect RB Peyton Barber to have his best season as a pro.
On defense, there is a big question mark as to who will play where and at what position in Todd Bowles new 3-4 defense. Shaquil Barrett was an excellent acquisition. The Bucs definitely get an “A” for that signing. Barrett has shown he can rush the passer as an OLB or slide inside and be the Mike LB.
If we keep Gerald McCoy, our D-Line has the potential to be nasty with McCoy still playing 3 technique. It’s still going to be a one gap defense with Vea in the middle at NT and JPP rushing from the opposite side. The LBs are definitely an athletic group with Lavonte David possibly switching to MLB while Carl Nassib and possibly Noah Spence will be pass rushing OLBs. You can definitely look for Deone Bucannon to be switching between safety and LB.
In the defensive backfield, we are incredibly thin at CB. Right now, this is the Bucs greatest weakness. The only CBs they have with any name recognition is Carlton Davis and Vernon Hargreaves. The Bucs will definitely have to take a CB sometime on the second day of the draft. At safety, we are young, but there is a lot of talent there.
All in all, I personally see the Bucs going 10-6, with a potent offense and an extremely aggressive defense.
