Sign The Honey Badger?

1 min read

In March 2018 Tyrann Mathieu was released from Arizona, and he was quickly linked to Tampa. He ultimately decided to sign with the Houston Texans for a 1 year $ 7,000,000 contract. With Bruce Arians becoming the new head coach in Tampa he is again favored to sign with his former head coach, and his former defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

He saw his best year under Todd in 2015. With 89 tackles, 1 sack and 5 Interceptions, he was named to his only pro-bowl that year. He finished last year with 89 tackles, 3 sacks, and 2 interceptions, the 3 sacks were a career high for the honey badger.

He’s still young, turning 27 this year, but for 7 to 8 million a year “is he worth it” is what everyone is asking. I wouldn’t mind him signing, but you have to believe that we can spend that money in an area with a greater concern like a cornerback to line up opposite second-year cornerback Carlton Davis or offensive line help.

I just don’t think it’s a wise decision even with Todd Bowles coaching the defense. With Justin Evans and Justin Whitehead already in the defensive backfield, it would be wise to see if they can excel back there together, coach Bowles should make everyone on this defense better.
