Brentson Buckner: Gone But Never Forgotten

2 min read

Just like spring cleaning, the Bucs have completely cleaned house. Brentson Buckner the Bucs defensive line coach this past year has not been retained, the man to help Jason Pierre Paul break the 13-year long-standing curse of Tampa Defensive lineman without double-digit sacks was given his pink slip.

Kacy Rodgers, the new D-line coach was Todd Bowles defensive coordinator for the Jets. He was recently the defensive line coach for Miami 2008-2014, so he has experience coaching the D-line. This move makes me think that Tampa will change its defensive line alignment to a hybrid front consisting of 3-4 along with 4-3 front seven. He was in Miami when Cameron Wake was a rookie, he helped mold Wake into a top 5 defensive end, during his stay in Miami. Wake posted 63 sacks in 6 years, averaging 10 sacks a season, that is nothing to scoff at. In just his second year, Wake posted 14 sacks in 2010, and his most sacks came in 2012 with 15. So the man can coach up talent, which I’m all for having done.

Buckner this past season showed our defensive line how to be nasty. He preached fundamentals and playing all the way through the whistle. His guidance helped Carl “Nasty” Nassib, Vinny Curry, McCoy, JPP, and Vita Vea bring relevance back to the Tampa Bay defensive line. I thought without a doubt he would be the only coach retained because he was part of Bucco Bruce Arians staff out west in Arizona, yet I was wrong. I really enjoyed the passion and grit, he bought with him, and this will be missed. I have complete faith in Bruce Arians’ process, the way, and the speed he put his coaching staff together impressed me.

Buckner will land on his feet like always. I remember dreading Sundays when the Bucs played Carolina because I knew Buckner, Peppers, Jenkins, and Rucker would be prepared thoroughly for our O-line. That Defensive line in the early ’00s is still considered by most one of the best ever.

I just enjoyed watching him as a player as much as a coach, I wish him luck, and know he will make any defense better just by walking through the door.
