5 Bucs To Keep An Eye On In Preseason Finale

Advertisements

With the preseason coming to an end this Saturday when the Bucs travel to Houston to face the Texans, there’s still a few depth spots that need to be assessed before teams have to trim their rosters from 80 to 53.
This is not like any other preseason for the defending Super Bowl Champions. In years past, not every starting spot was already spoken for. This year seems to be slightly different as the Bucs have managed to bring back all 22 starters from their Super Bowl-winning roster, but that hasn’t stopped a few players from making use of their playing time this preseason. Unfortunately, roughly 27 players are fighting for a spot on the final roster. Below is 5 players to keep an eye on during the finale.

Ke’Shawn Vaughn (30) Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Running backs Ke’Shawn Vaughn and CJ Prosise: With Ronald Jones II expected to share carries with Leonard Fournette and incoming veteran Giovanni Bernard, it’s not impossible, but hard to imagine the Bucs carrying 5 backs on the depth chart. For second-year back Ke’Shawn Vaughn, it’s going to come down to, can he prove to the coaching staff that the game has slowed down enough for him? After a shaky rookie season when Vaughn played in only ten games (zero starts) and only mustered 109 yards on 26 attempts and his lone touchdown being one of his five receptions.

Will Vaughn be able to raise his stock to remain on the team or will he be unseated by sixth-year veteran C.J. Prosise, who signed with the Bucs during the offseason? Both backs seem to be locking eyes on what could be the final chair in the running back room. Prosise, who spent last season with the Texans after a four-year stint with the Seahawks, really hasn’t been one of those “break your ankles” type backs as he never seemed to get his footing since entering the NFL. He was drafted in the 3rd round in 2016.
It’ll be interesting to see how things break down for both backs between their offensive production and special teams work. Right now, it does seem Vaughn could potentially have the edge being the younger back, but as we’ve all witnessed before, anything is possible in the NFL.

LB K.J. Britt: Not much can be said for the rookie from Auburn, but during the first two preseason games, Britt has shown glimpses that could potentially help him lock up a roster spot as depth in the linebacker position behind Lavonte David. Britt could potentially be used primarily on special teams and needs to continue to show his grit if he has any desire to make the final roster.

Pat O’Connor Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

DE Patrick O’Connor: O’Connor has been showing glimpses of his potential this preseason. In last week’s preseason loss to the Titans, O’Connor was tied for 4th in tackles to go along with being one of two players to record a sack against the Titans. Head Coach Bruce Arians sang his praises in regards to O’Connor, but that doesn’t mean the fifth-year player can afford to take any snaps lightly if he plans on returning to the 53-man roster again this season.

Cryil Grayson – buccaneers.com

WR Cyril Grayson: Grayson will have to continue to let his speed and production do the talking for him if he plans on making the roster again this season. The 27-year-old, second-year receiver, hasn’t had much to celebrate before last season when he caught his lone pass during the NFC Championship Game vs Green Bay en route to the Bucs second Super Bowl Championship. Grayson, who was second on the team last week in receiving yards and receptions, still has tons of work to do if he plans to remain in the Bucs high-powered, future Hall of Fame receivers room that’s already filled with Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown, Scotty Miller, Tyler Johnson, Jaelon Darden, and Jayden Mickens. My guess is a possible practice squad role but another big game could easily pursue the coaching staff that he is deserving of a spot.

[Opinion Editorial]: Keep The Same Energy For Trask As Some Still Show Towards Winston?

Fans sure do love them some Jameis

Jameis Winston, yet again, found a way to set social media on fire last night with his performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars, throwing for 2 touchdowns early in the game. If there’s one thing Winston has been successful at since leaving Tampa last season and signing with the division rival Saints, it is living “rent-free” in many Bucs fan’s heads.

Whether you’re a fan of the man who gave us five years or not, many fans seem to have an opinion on the young man, who was drafted in 2015 over Marcus Mariota with the first-overall pick.

Many fans can’t seem to get over it. It’s like a bad breakup. Some of those fans just seem to live off of his name; almost like they’re begging for the “ex” to take them back. And I, for one, get it because of how critical I was of him throughout those five years he was here. Did I analyze all 2,548 attempts or his 1,563 completions? In some shape or form, I did. But not to the degree of some. Was I analyzing all 121 touchdowns or 88 interceptions? Again, in some way or another. In ways, I was very critical of his decisions when it came to his “superman” mentality while possibly being too critical. Truth be told, I’m one of the fans that simply remind New Orleans Saints’ fans that his first-and-last throws as a Buccaneer were a touchdown for the opposing team via one of his 88 interceptions.

Will Trask receive the same energy from Bucs fans?

On Saturday, Bucs rookie Kyle Trask had a rough outing in the preseason loss to the Tennessee Titans, throwing 2 interceptions. A social media post made by myself had some fans talking. Although the situations are different, the long-term still is similar to the one Winston is stepping into. One that had Winston poised to be the future of the franchise.

With that being said, the same energy that everyone continues to waste on our former quarterback needs to be shown towards Trask. Kyle Trask, who has a great opportunity to learn under the greatest of all-time and surefire Hall of Famer Tom Brady, deserves the same praise and the same criticism that we have carried for Winston. Granted, Trask isn’t entering the season as a starter, much less expected to be any competition to unseat Blaine Gabbert as the back-up. What is similar to the Winston story, is that Trask is expected to take the wheel once Brady decides to call it quits. If he ever does.

Truthfully, we should have higher expectations of Trask due to who he has the opportunity to learn from. So, if we’re going to continue to waste energy on a division rival, then why not give the same energy to the guy who is actually on our roster? This can’t be just a Florida/Florida State thing.

Everybody Will Play vs The Bengals

Normally, you do not see your starting players, let alone a 7-time Super Bowl Champion quarterback, play much in the preseason, but this year it seems that it may be a bit different. Bruce Arians was asked if the Buccaneers will treat this Saturday’s game as a typical first preseason game; he said yes, but everyone will suit up and see some time on the field.

“More like a first. Everybody will play; don’t know how much, but everybody will play. The Titans week; we’re going against them for two practices that will determine how that is as far as who plays in that one. And the last one, we’ll play a bunch.”

QB Tom Brady, OLB Jason Pierre-Paul, and WR Antonio Brown had off-season knee surgery, so it is important to get them out there in some capacity against another team going full speed before the start of the NFL season.

Other players are just returning, like TE O.J. Howard, who missed most of the season after rupturing his Achilles during the game against the Chargers early last October. TE Cameron Brate missed most of training camp while on the Active Physically Unable to Perform list [PUP] with an undisclosed injury.

I would not expect the first three mentioned to play more than half of a series, they could play an entire series, which would surely test out their knees, but we will just have to wait and see how things go this Saturday night.

Bucs are going national during the preseason

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will travel to Pittsburg to face off against the Steelers for the first game of the preseason.

“The Buccaneers-Steelers matchup will still be shown live in the Bay Area by Tampa Bay’s preseason partner, WFLA, News Channel 8. However, the NFLN simulcast will give out-of-market Buccaneer fans the same opportunity to catch the team’s debut under Arians. The August 9 contest is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET.” – Scott Smith Senior Writer/Editor of Buccaneers.com

According to Scott Smith, preseason week one will mark just the second time that the Bucs have played a preseason game in Pittsburgh. Smith also noted that despite both teams having 90 men on the roster you will see a fair share of big named players during the game.

The last time the Buccaneers faced the Steelers on the road in the preseason was in 1996 when Tony Dungy lost his first game 13-3.
