Patriots: Another must win for Buccaneers?

Another Important Test in Gauging the Buccaneers’ Growth
Before the Detroit game, I called it a must-win. Not because the Buccaneers would be eliminated with a loss, but because it was a test — a chance to see how they stack up against one of the NFC’s better teams.
This week’s matchup with the New England Patriots falls into the same category. Both Detroit and New England are rising programs in 2025, and these are the kinds of games that reveal where a team truly stands. For years, the Bucs have often come up short in these so-called “measuring stick” games. Sunday in Tampa offers another chance to change that.
A Measuring Stick Amid the Injury Bug
At 6–2, Tampa Bay has a strong record, but that number might not tell the full story. Even before the Detroit loss, there was reason to believe the team wasn’t playing quite as well as its record indicated.
Injuries have been the biggest factor holding the Bucs back. Running back Bucky Irving’s absence — now stretching to six straight games — has been felt every week. The offense has struggled to find the same rhythm without his spark.
The good news? The Patriots, while improved, are beatable. Rookie quarterback Drake Maye has brought life to their offense, and head coach Mike Vrabel has them playing tougher, more disciplined football than they’ve shown since the post-Brady era began. But they’re still a young team learning to win. So are the Bucs — though in a different phase of their development.
Mayfield Must Lead the Way — Again
Once again, it’ll fall on Baker Mayfield to carry the offense. The veteran quarterback has been the Bucs’ stabilizer all season, making clutch throws late in games and keeping the team composed under pressure.
Receiver Emeka Egbuka’s return from injury could help. The rookie flashed big-play ability earlier in the year before being sidelined in Week 6 against San Francisco. Getting him back into rhythm will be crucial for an offense that’s been searching for consistent playmakers.
The Buccaneers have now won four straight NFC South titles — the longest streak in franchise history. While the division hasn’t exactly been stacked with contenders during that run, it still takes organization and leadership to win consistently. The next step, though, is beating quality teams outside the division.
Time to Take That Next Step
If Tampa Bay wants to be seen as a true contender, these are the games it must win. Beating teams like Detroit and New England — physical, well-coached squads — is what separates playoff participants from championship threats.
Parity across the league makes that easier said than done, but this team needs a signature win to validate its place among the NFC’s best. A victory over New England would do just that — a win that says the Bucs aren’t simply beating up on lesser teams, but can go toe-to-toe with anyone.
This should be a fun one for Buccaneers fans — a matchup with real meaning, not just in the standings but in perception. A win would go a long way toward proving this team’s legitimacy.
Go Bucs.
