Injury is his only obstacle

An injury to Emeka Egbuka or Baker Mayfield may be the only thing that will prevent Egbuka from winning the NFL Rookie of the Year. While there are some talented rookies in this year’s class (Ashton Jeanty, Omarion Hampton, Quinshon Judkins, Jaxson Dart), consider the following: through the first 5 games of the season, Egbuka has set NFL records for a rookie. Becoming the first player to have at least 25 receptions, 400 receiving yards, and 5+ receiving touchdowns through 5 games.  Just look at what he did against the Seahawks. Erupting for 7 receptions totaling 163 yards and a touchdown of twenty yards, while also catching the ensuing two-point conversion. All five of his downfield (10+ air yards) targets were caught; 145 yards, and the touchdown came on those alone. He did this all against zone coverage, running 29 of his 31 routes against zone looks and torching it at every level.  It was as close to a homecoming as it gets for the talented Bucs’ rookie, as he is from Tacoma, Washington.

Delving even deeper

He now ranks second in the NFL in receiving yards versus zone (418) and first in touchdowns against zone (4). He also exposed Seahawks corner Josh Jobe for 81 yards in coverage, the most that the defender has ever allowed to a single player in his career. Compare Egbuka’s stats from the above paragraph to those of Bucs’ current legend at the position, Mike Evans, after five games as a rookie: receptions – 16, yards – 187, touchdowns – 0. This isn’t to disparage the Bucs’ legend, but to show the pace of its newest receiving star.

Rookie of the year is in the bag!

Is there any doubt that a star was born in the Emerald City this past Sunday? It was much more than just a breakout game for a talented player. It was the introduction to the NFL World of the arrival of something very special. Egbuka has the skills and the intelligence to be an all-time great. A player who, if he can stay relatively healthy throughout his career, will surely be fitted for a gold jacket in Canton one day. Rookie of the year this season is all but in the bag. Hopefully, like Mike Evans, he will play his entire career in Tampa. He will surely be one-two with Evans in the franchise record book. How many GMs in this league can claim they have done a better job drafting over the years than Jason Licht?

Quotes

Todd Bowles

“Emeka had a homecoming (Sunday),” coach Todd Bowles said. ”He continues to amaze and compete and do the things that everybody has seen him do, like he did in college, and again he was outstanding.”

Bowles was asked if he’s ever seen a rookie receiver as polished as Egbuka. “Not this early, I have not,” the coach said.

“It’s his intelligence. It’s his willingness to work. He’s just one of them guys,” Bowles said. “He has the entire make-up and the entire package, and that’s hard to get and hard to be as a rookie.”

Baker Mayfield

“It’s something we talked about pregame in the locker room,” Mayfield said. ”It was third and a little bit extra-long looks. They have a certain coverage that, ‘Hey, if they run it, take the top off, because the corner is expecting help,’ and he did just that. The protection was unbelievable on that. I was able to triple-hitch it.

“‘Mek’ is just a smart football player, taking things we talked about in the locker room before and take it to the game field and be able to react and do it well.”

Emeka Egbuka

“It was the exact way we drew it up,” he said. ”It’s kind of rare to have that happen in the NFL. There’s not oftentimes it happens the way you draw it up, but it did in that case.”

“I’m very proud to be from here, the Pacific Northwest, born and raised,” he said. ”All my family is still here, so I had a lot of people at my game. … It just means a lot. Just a homecoming for us, and to be able to have that performance was great.”
