Bucky Irving’s expanding role so far

In Bucky Irving’s first season, he finished first among all rookie running backs in the league with 1514 yards from scrimmage. Of that total, only 392 yards were receiving yards (47 receptions for 0 TDs in 2024). Rachaad White posted 393 yards receiving (51 receptions, 6 TDs in 2024. White found the end zone six times, to none for Irving. Rachaad White has been considered a threat in the passing game, racking up 1232 yards on 165 receptions, with 10 TDs over the last three seasons. White was most productive in offensive coordinator Liam Coen’s offense last season, finding sweet ground six times.
Though it is very early in the 2025 season, Irving finds himself averaging 5 receptions a game. He turned in 50 yards receiving, hauling in all 6 of his receptions in week one and leading all pass catchers against Atlanta. He also scored on a 9-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter. In week 2, the Bucs were faced with being down late to the Texans, but overcame the deficit to win in regulation. Irving again caught all 4 passes Mayfield threw his way, staying perfect in the young season at 10 of 10. Rachaad White, in the two games combined, has just 3 grabs total.

Josh Grizzard’s offense: Bucky-friendly

It is, as I point out, early in the season, so making predictions might be viewed as unwise. However, I think I can safely say that, when healthy, Bucky Irving will be at the center of Grizzard’s attack. Whether on the ground or in the air, Irving will be heavily involved. I predict he will finish well ahead of White in receptions this season, expanding Irving’s role in the total offensive picture. The fourth-round steal has many more Buccaneer highlight reels in his future. If he stays healthy during his time here, he could end up holding some team records by the time it’s all said and done. He is already on pace to smash his receiving numbers from his rookie campaign. Stay tuned. Go Bucs!
Notably, Rachaad White is in the final year of his rookie contract, which may or may not influence offensive decisions.
