A Cool Breeze is Headed to Tampa.

It’s late in the evening on April 25th, 2025, and the #NFL is putting on its annual NFL Draft, hosted by the Green Bay Packers. 205,000 fans were in attendance to see this yearly spectacle — an event that could change the lives of over 200 young men forever!

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers sit at the 19th spot awaiting their turn to race the clock. There is an overwhelming feeling of assurance among most fans about which direction the team will go in deciding their first pick. Defense. Most believed that this should be the selection, due to the team’s inability to prevent teams from scoring in late matches, and also by understanding that scoring 13 points in the wildcard round isn’t good enough.

Following the offseason signings of key free agent pieces, it seemed as if shoring up the defense was a priority.

With the additions of Hasaan Reddick, veteran cornerback, Kindle Vildor, veteran linebacker; Anthony Walker, and the return of veteran-defensive stalwart and Buccaneer legend Lavonte David and cornerback Bryce Hall, it seemed like the Buccaneers were alluding to the idea that they were looking to add more defensive players to the roster.

However, even with players like Jihaad Campbell, Jahdae Barron, Will Johnson, and James Pearce Jr. still on the board, the Bucs make the call and turn the draft card in for the commissioner to announce the team’s selection.

Roger Goodell makes his way to the podium to make his seemingly repetitive announcement, he makes every time he steps to the microphone, every time there is a different team in a different round at a different selection spot. ” With the 19th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Emeka Egbuka, Wide Receiver, Ohio State.”

A perfect nickname for a speedy receiver with a 4.42 speed.

And just like that, a “Cool Breeze” blew over Tampa Bay. Buccaneers’ GM Jason Licht and the front office had the fanbase scratching their heads, curious as to why there seemed to be such a need for a defensive player, and ultimately, deciding to make an offensive selection.

Of course, Jason Licht was questioned about their selection, to which he replied, “Ya know this was a pick for the future, as well as the present.” He continued, matter-of-factly, “If this player were here, we’re gonna take him and we’re gonna be happy with him!”

Jason Licht also went on record to comment that Wide Receiver Chris Godwin was on track with his rehab and that the team is still shooting for week one. So, this pick had nothing to do with Chris Godwin’s recovery.

“Cool Breeze” is a nickname given to Egbuka by his mother due to his calm and collected demeanor even under pressure. Fittingly enough.

Jason Licht did mention that Egbuka’s character grade is “The Highest of Highs.” &  “Couldn’t find anybody to say anything bad about him — as far as, “his leadership, commitment, passion, and accountability!”

At 6’1″ and 205 lbs. With 31 1/2″ arms and 9 5/8″ hands, he makes for a nice weapon for the #Cannonkrewe in Tampa.

Statistically, in college, Egbuka in 49 games caught 205 passes on 286 targets, for 2868 yards, and 24 touchdowns, gaining 1000 receiving yards and double-digit touchdowns, 2 out of 3 seasons. The 2023 season was the only low season he had. He caught for just a little over 500 yards and did so while playing alongside 2 stud receivers at Ohio State, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. However, he still seemed to produce. In one of his 4 seasons, he didn’t reach 1,000 or more yards and double-digit touchdowns due to an ankle injury. He is a National Championship Winner.

Buccaneer fans are left on edge, following this shocking turn of events in round one, and have to wonder what this means for the rest of the Draft. Will the Bucs finally make a defensive pick? Are there more surprises in store?

To put at ease anyone’s mind, Licht and company have been putting a solid product on the field and seem to get better at doing just that every single year. I am excited for what is to come, and I am sure Baker Mayfield and the rest of the offense are also excited, no, licking their chops and ready to get to work.
