Devin White Receives 2 Fines For Week 8

Devin White was fined for multiple penalties against the Saints.

The Bucs were warned not to rough the quarterback,” according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times—and they weren’t kidding.

The Buccaneers committed 11 penalties for a total of 99 yards that Sunday; not all of them were on the quarterback, but one or two is too many.

“Well, you know, this was the one that was the most disappointing. We do a scouting report on who’s calling the game every week. This referee is very, very protective of the quarterback. They lead the league in roughing the passer penalties, and we committed obvious penalties. Any time you touch them on the head, it’s a penalty.”

One of those penalties occurred when Devin White made a tackle on a scrambling Jameis Winston, which got flagged as a Horse-collar Tackle (Video of official NFL rule on Horse Collar Tackle with examples). It resulted in a season-ending knee injury (ACL/MCL) for the Saints quarterback. White was fined $15,450.00 for Unnecessary Roughness for the tackle on Winston and roughing the passer on Trevor Sieman later in the game. In addition to the $15k fine, White received a $10,300.00 fine for Unsportsmanlike Conduct for “Taunting” Saints running back Mark Ingram.

Bucs will focus on correcting these penalties and getting players healthy during the Bye Week. When they return from the Bye Week, they will face the Washington Football Team; It’s a safe bet that the team will have learned from their mistakes and play more disciplined football. Bruce Arians is going to hold each player accountable.

“Players just have to take the responsibility to play smarter.” The Bye Week will certainly do them some good.
