The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have announced their Week 5 list of protected practice squad players. Former Miami Hurricane kicker Jose Borregales makes the Protected list for the fourth consecutive list, while tight end Cody McElroy finds himself on the list for the first time.
Additionally, safety Troy Warner and Rashard Robinson are placed on the protected list, which is likely due to the injuries to the secondary.
The Buccaneers protecting these players guarantees that they can be elevated for the upcoming game; the team may only elevate two from the practice squad each week.
The reason teams elect to protect players on the practice squad is so no other teams may sign them. However, according to Scott Smith of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, no player is protected on Monday or Tuesday; therefore may sign with another team.
Protecting Warner is likely due to the injury to Antoine Winfield Jr., who according, to head coach Bruce Arians, may find it difficult to come out of Concussion Protocol in time for the matchup against the Dolphins. The team is hopeful that Jamel Dean can return to practice this week, but with a projection of 2-4 weeks with a strained quad for Carlton Davis III, the Bucs will need to hold on to as many secondary players as they can.
