Devin White, drafted in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, has been one of the best linebackers in the league2019, and in 2021, he could accomplish something that hasn’t been done since Derrick Brooks in 2002.
The third-year player out of LSU had a monstrous rookie season that witnessed him get beat out for Defensive Rookie of the Year by 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa. As many Bucs fans claim, White was robbed of the award after posting 91 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 1 INT, 4 fumble recoveries while scoring 2 touchdowns in 13 games. In many ways, many fans believed that the youngster was a shoo-in for the award, but he was shown no love for his efforts.
When 2020 came around, many fans were hyped over the fact that White could easily be looked at for the DPOY honors, but instead was snubbed for both the award and Pro Bowl honors after recording 141 tackles, 9 sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Instead, White was awarded a Lombardi Trophy to go along with his 38 tackles, 2 fumble recoveries, and 2 interceptions — one against Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LV that helped seal the organization’s second championship.
If the Bucs accomplish back-to-back titles, it’ll be difficult to keep the 33rd-ranked best player in the NFL from securing the award while continuing to sky-rocket his value. If White can accomplish the feat, it’ll be hard to argue that he is indeed this generation’s next Derrick Brooks, even though the latter has 11 Pro Bowl’s under his belt.
