When Shaq Barrett signed his 1-year $4 million dollar prove it deal, very few people knew who Shaq was. As a matter of fact, some fans thought he was a rookie. So, before we go any deeper as to why Shaq needs to be signed, let’s take a second to explain where this player has come from.
Shaq was signed by the Denver Broncos back in 2014. He was a back up to DeMarcus Ware during Denver’s Super Bowl 50 run. Barret spent 4 years learning from Von Miller until he signed with Tampa in 2019.
Bucs could resign him or even tag him
One thing is for certain, the Bucs are willing to keep Barrett around beyond this season. There is no way the front office is going to let this man walk after putting up these types of numbers. 9 sacks, 2 Pass Deflections, 1 INT, and 3 FF, along with Defensive Player of the Week for week 2(should’ve been 3 and 4 too).
The restructuring of JPP’s contract makes more sense for this as Shaq is 1 of 25 players that could become a free agent after this season. I think the Bucs need to lock this guy down for the next 4 or 5 years. Keeping him with young talents such as Devin White and even Lavonte David would be huge for this defense.
Time is now
Teams are beginning to take notice of Shaq and the price could only go up as he continues to perform. The Bucs need to act if they don’t want to see this guy leave, especially if he can bring home DPOY honors. In my opinion, I’d love to see Shaq in a Bucs uniform for the foreseeable future.
