Vita Vea Returns to Practice

Advertisements

Vita Vea was listed as missing practice on Wednesday due to a groin injury but had returned to practice. Vita Vea, per Todd Bowles, has been taking on double teams which have allowed Shaq Barrett to get to the QB so often. We will definitely need that on Sunday against the Rams.

Ryan Jensen took another day off from practice on Thursday as he is dealing with a sore back, and has some inflammation. He should return on Friday. We were assured not to worry. He will be good to go on Sunday.

Perriman was seen on the field today, and Devante Bond returned yesterday.

Again, Devin White was out due to a lingering MCL sprain and is likely to miss another game.

Jamel Dean also missed practice with a lingering ankle injury, and he is also likely not to play this Sunday.

Chris Godwin was out again with a hip stinger, and hopefully, he gets back tomorrow.

Shaquil Barrett Looks to Los Angeles to Set More Records

Despite the 1-2 start for the Buccaneers, and despite blowing an 18 point lead against that team from East Rutherford, we have still seen a few things stand out so far this season. Quarterback Jameis Winston has been playing some very smart football, Ronald Jones II is averaging over five yards per carry, and Mike Evans appears to be whatever stomach ailment he was dealing with. However, the thing that probably stands out the most through the first three games, is the production and play of linebacker Shaquil Barrett.

Shaquil Barrett could have still been a member of the Denver Broncos had it not been for Elway being too cheap to shell out the extra one million dollars that it would have cost to keep him based on the offer he received from the Buccaneers. In the first three games, the entire Broncos defense has recorded ZERO sacks, while Shaquil Barrett has recorded eight sacks by himself through the first three games of the season. Somehow I’m betting John Elway is probably a bit upset that they let Barrett walk only to have him put up such big numbers this early in the season.

Barrett has already set the Buccaneers’ team record for most sacks through three games as he surpassed the record of 5.5 sacks set by Warren Sapp and ties the league record set by Mark Gastineau way back in 1984. If Barrett is able to pick up at least another 1.5 sacks against the Rams, he will set a new NFL record for most sacks through the first four games of a season, which is currently held by Mark Gastineau with 9. If you think he’s done setting records, you’d be wrong, as Barrett is the first Buccaneer since Simeon Rice (2003) to record 4 sacks in a single game.

If Barrett continues on his current pace, he would put up somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 sacks, which is absolutely unheard of, given that the current record held by Michael Strahan is sitting at 22.5 sacks in a season. While the odds aren’t necessarily in his favor when it comes to putting up 40 sacks in a season, the odds also weren’t in his favor when he made it to the NFL or when he recorded 8 sacks in his first three games with the Buccaneers.

The upcoming game against the Rams will show us if this is a pace that Barrett can keep up throughout the season, or if he simply managed to find the right teams to play against to start out the season. While the Giants were one of the worst offensive lines last season, the 49ers and Panthers both had the 10th and 11th ranked offensive lines, and we saw what Barrett did to them. Week one opponents, the 49ers currently have the 1st ranked offensive line in the league and Barrett was still able to get into the backfield and pick up his first sack as a Buccaneer. The Rams have the 3rd ranked offensive line, having given up 3 sacks already this season, so it’s quite possible that we’ll see Barrett pick up at least another two sacks, and continue the monstrous pace he has set this season.

If Barrett is able to pick up another two sacks against the Rams, he’ll not only set a new NFL record through 4 games, but he’ll tie Chidi Ahanotu for the 10th most sacks by a Buccaneer in one season and be well on his way to breaking Sapp’s team record of 16.5. Barrett will also pick up another $250 thousand bonus for hitting the second tier of the sack incentives built into his contract, which might prove to be a nice incentive heading into Los Angeles this Sunday.

There is still a lot at stake for Barrett beyond just his bonus money, however, as he’s also playing for a new contract, a contract which could pay very well if he’s able to keep up the pace he’s shown thus far. A lot of the questions surrounding Barrett will be answered this Sunday, but if I’m Andre Whitworth and the Rams, I’d be paying extra attention to Barrett, because chances are good that Goff is going to be picking himself up off the Bermuda grass a few times before the game is over.

Why the Bucs will beat the Rams

1-2 could have easily been 0-3, but could have just as well been 3-0 had a few things gone our way. Enough of the past though, I am looking forward and here to tell you why we will beat the L.A. Rams on Sunday in their own home and what it’s going to take for that to happen.

1. Blocking Aaron Donald: Ryan Jensen will have his hands full Sunday, having been tasked with blocking Aaron Donald. This man isn’t Gerald McCoy, he’s a freak on the defensive line. Just ask Ndamukong Suh, who played next to him last season. Donald racked up 20.5 sacks last season and is going to demand a double team.

2. Accounting for Clay Matthews and Dante Fowler: When you double team one player, that usually leaves an opening for another. The Bucs (more importantly Jameis) are going to have to keep their heads on a swivel for these 2 outside linebackers. These guys aren’t to be taken lightly.

3. Todd Gurley and Co.: Priority number 1 for Bucs defense, for the 3rd week in a row, will be to tame on of the Top 5 backs in the league in Todd Gurley. While doing that, the backs need to make sure they’re accounting for threats such as Cooper Kupp, Brandin Cooks, and Robert Woods. If they come out playing like they did in the first half last Sunday, we will be in good shape to secure a win. But if not, it’s going to be a long day.

Overall Assessment

In my opinion, this is going to be the true test for this young team and for the coaching staff. Bowles will need to open that playbook a little deeper, and I feel he does. The Bucs will edge the Rams 31-28. Matt Gay will redeem himself hitting a last-minute FG to put the Bucs over on the Rams.

Shaq Barrett: Setting himself up for life?

Advertisements

Sack Specialists aka Defensive Darlings

There are a lot of things, I don’t know. There is one thing that I know without a doubt: Any defensive player that can rack up big numbers in the sack department is rewarded very, very, handsomely. It is probably the biggest salary booster that there is for a player that never has to touch the ball, think about it. Some offensive lineman can demand high salaries without touching the ball, but nowhere near as much as a sack specialist can demand.

Mixed results up until now

Having said that, the early success of Shaq Barrett has propelled his name, and sack numbers across the league, you can bet it’s not going unnoticed. It’s no secret that the Bucs only signed him to a one year, 4 Million dollar contract. His options are wide open for 2020, and if he continues at half or a third of the pace he is now, those options are going to be many, and valuable. Now I’m going to do some assuming. I’m assuming that because he Loves Bowles Defensive Scheme (he said as much when he signed) and that now he has excelled mightily in it, his first choice would be to again sign with the Bucs if the price is right.

What might Barrett command in a new deal

What might that price be? Salaries for quarterback destroyers vary quite a bit. Shaq is only 26, so he is still young, and should have quite a few years left to harass the man behind center. So far in his career, he has played steady, with signs of being more than average, but this is the first year that he has played lights out. That is why the Bucs got him at a bargain, and only committed to a one year deal. Kind of a test drive if you will. It turns out that the Caprice Classic with nice rims that pulled into One Buc in the preseason has now become a Bugatti Chiron (1578 hp- 304mph) and is out in the parking lot smoking the tires, disappearing into a wall of smoke. So what should the Bucs do? Normally before a player gets a huge contract, he’s had a few years of excellence under his belt from his rookie contract. That’s not the case here though.

Quarterback destroyers worth their weight in gold

With Barrett, he will only have one year of excellence to show, and that’s assuming his stellar play continues at a reasonable level through 16 games. Still, with the need for players of that caliber, teams will more than likely be willing to pull the trigger on a big payout. I am again assuming, Shaq will want a fairly long term deal. He’s in his prime, and probably hasn’t reached his best yet. I would think he wants the big payout now while he’s still young and getting better. A place to settle down and call home may also play a part.

Reasonably, what might the Bucs offer

Then there is another angle, a two to three year deal of much substance with the Bucs, time to further prove without a doubt, his true worth, and then go for the mega-deal at 28-29 years old with some good years still left. Three years, 28 million is a figure I could see the Bucs offering, and him possibly biting on. David has a 5 year 50 million deal, so 28 million, 3 years seems fair, with a ball breaker contract coming upon the end of that one if he continues to be at the top of his game. But what do I know? There may be several teams ready to throw down 78 million for 6-8 years with a butt load of it guaranteed. Time will tell how this all will play out, but you can be sure, teams are paying attention knowing Barrett’s one year deal, and availability next year. Licht may afford himself a favor if he acted sooner than later, while the irons hot.

Wrapping up

No matter how it plays out, I know we are all hoping that Barrett can keep it up all season, it seems improbable that he could. But, I thought it would be very tough for him to get 3 sacks again in this last game, and he got 4, so anything is possible. Go Bucs!!!

A Bond Over A Team: A Father/Daughters Sunday and Special Moment at Ray Jay

Advertisements

Many have gone to games since they were young. Some remember the awful days of the Bucs starting the franchise.

Me? I’ve been rocking it since birth in ’88. I remember going to the old Sombrero for a game against Warren Moon and the Vikings. I witnessed the rebrand, training camp across from UT, the Lombardi being raised, and the up’s and downs in between.

It’s a Father/Daughter Thing

But, nothing compares to taking your own kids to their first-ever regular-season game (their 1st game overall was Week 2 preseason vs Miami). The hype we had heading to our first ever WTB Tailgate. All the people they met and reacquainted themselves with from the previous game (some ever had goodie bags for them *Special Thanks to BucNutz)
After, it was off across the street to watch our team take on the Giants. The girls had an absolute thrill even though we lost. While leaving the gates, I decided to take the girls over by the player exit to see who we could see.

During that time, my youngest was lucky enough to capture a photo with her favorite player Lavonte David before he got in his car. My oldest got a picture with Jameis Winston and both were able to take a picture with Will Gholston as well.

The special moment that made a loss feel like a win

Earlier in the day, my oldest (Isabella, 6) received some beads from a friend. She hadn’t taken them off throughout the whole game. Seeing her favorite player Mike Evans leaving with his wife and daughter, she saw the look on his daughters face. She told me “she wanted to give Mike Evans’ daughter, her beads because she looked sad”.

After telling Mike the story, he graciously allowed my daughter to give the beads to him for her. The smile on her face was absolutely priceless. I saw the same look on her face and in her eyes that she had when she got her jersey signed by him at camp. The smile on my face is just an understatement of how proud I was of this little girl for thinking of someone else.
At that moment; my team may not have won the game, but my team gave us a moment that neither of us will ever forget. Go Bucs!!!
