Winston: Necessary Improvements In Order to Succeed in 2019

2 min read

Love him or hate him, Jameis Winston will be the starting QB for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019. His time with Buccaneers has been a bumpy one, to say the least.

We will not touch on his off the field issues, those have spoken for themselves and can never be repeated if he wants a career.

Moving on, here are a few changes Winston could make going forward, really, not just 2019.

First: Working on turnovers is the biggest need and that is a no brainer.

Winston’s first career pass was a pick 6, and he’s been reported to be on a historic trend for INTs, and that is believable. Remember when he was benched in the game against Cincinnati in the 3rd quarter after throwing 4 in that game alone?

Second: He needs to read defenses better.

Just because you want to make the big play, it does not mean anything if you do not fully pay attention to the defensive formation before the snap. Perhaps Arians will help with this, perhaps not, but it will be up to him at the end of the day. There are 35 seconds on the play clock, use them wisely.

Third: Jameis Winston needs to slow down.

The Buccaneers registered one of the most explosive offenses in the league and one of the best in franchise history. There is no doubt, Winston had a hand in this, however, again, you’ve got 35 seconds on the play clock, so use them.

Winston’s most heartbreaking mistakes are on the coattails of his largest plays. Slow down, catch your breath, and make the right decision. Do not look for the next big play because you just had one, take the 3-yard dump and get 6. You have to fight for the next down.
